How Long Does a Roof Replacement Take?

By the LPS Exteriors team · Leesburg, VA · Updated 2026

Short answer: most homes are done in one day. Our crews complete the majority of Northern Virginia residential roof replacements, tear-off to cleanup, between sunrise and dinner. Larger homes, steep pitches, slate, or structural repairs can extend to 2–3 days.

The day, hour by hour

  • 7–8 AM: Crew arrives, protects landscaping, decks, and AC units with tarps and plywood.
  • Morning: Complete tear-off to the deck. Compromised plywood is identified and replaced, you'll see photos of anything we find.
  • Midday: Ice-and-water shield, synthetic underlayment, drip edge, and flashing go down. This layer is what actually keeps water out for the next 25 years.
  • Afternoon: Shingles, ridge ventilation, pipe boots, and skylight flashing installed.
  • End of day: Full cleanup, debris hauled, gutters cleared, and the entire yard swept with rolling magnets for nails.

What can extend the timeline

Multiple layers of old shingles, hidden decking rot, complex rooflines with many valleys and dormers, premium materials like slate or cedar, and, this is Virginia, weather. We never open more roof than we can dry-in the same day.

Customers consistently mention our site cleanliness in reviews: "the job site was cleaned up at the end of each day." That's the standard, not the exception.
