What Are the Signs My Home Needs New Siding?

By the LPS Exteriors team · Leesburg, VA · Updated 2026

Siding is your home's protective shell. When it fails, the damage moves inward, sheathing, framing, insulation, drywall. Here's how to catch it early.

Exterior warning signs

  • Warping, buckling, or cracking. Panels that no longer sit flat are no longer keeping water out.
  • Severe fading or chalking. UV-degraded siding is brittle siding, the next hailstorm will prove it.
  • Rot, soft spots, or fungus. Especially at trim, corners, and near grade.
  • Frequent repainting. If wood siding needs paint every 3–4 years, replacement with fiber cement or engineered materials often costs less over a decade.

Interior warning signs

  • Rising heating and cooling bills. Failing siding and missing house wrap leak conditioned air year-round.
  • Peeling paint or wallpaper inside. Moisture getting through the wall assembly shows up indoors first as cosmetic damage.
  • Drafts near exterior walls. A wall you can feel wind through is a wall that's done its time.

What replacement gets you

Modern siding is a different product than what most Loudoun homes were built with. Insulated vinyl and fiber cement (like James Hardie) resist hail, hold color for decades, and measurably cut energy use. LPS installs them with color-matching technology and specialty profiles that eliminate gaps, warping, and visible seams.

Storm-damaged siding is often an insurance claim. We document damage and work with your insurer, the same stress-free process we run for roofs.
